North Iowa Police Officer Killed in Line of Duty to be Honored

A north Iowa police officer killed in the line of duty last fall will be honored posthumously at the state level later this week.

Algona Police officer Kevin Cram died September 13, 2023, while  attempting to serve a warrant for the arrest of 43-year-old Kyle Ricke of Algona. Ricke is accused of shooting Cram, who was previously a member of the Nora Springs Police Department from 2013 to 2015.

Cram’s name will be added to the Iowa Peace Officer Memorial during ceremonies this Friday, May 10, in Des Moines. Governor Kim Reynolds, Lt. Governor Adam Gregg, Iowa Department of Public Safety Commissioner Stephan Bayens, State of Iowa leadership, law enforcement partners and families will pay tribute to fallen peace officers who gave the ultimate sacrifice while protecting Iowans and their communities.

Also being added to the memorial is former Des Moines Police officer Phoukham Tran. In August 2011, he was hit by a truck while directing traffic at the Iowa State Fair. Tran suffered critical injuries and was forced to retire. He passed away November 2, 2023.
