North Iowa 19-Year-Old Won’t Stand Trial on Felony Eluding Charge

A north Iowa 19-year-old will not go to trial on a felony eluding charge.

On April 20, 2023, the Iowa State Patrol allegedly clocked Wyatt Mitchell of Allison driving 98 mph between Allison and Clarksville. A chase with speeds estimated as fast as 127 mph ended when Mitchell crashed on Highway 3, just west of Waverly.

Mitchell was seriously injured and airlifted to University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. He spent a month recovering before being charged with felony eluding. Authorities say Mitchell was not wearing a seat belt, admitted he was trying to kill himself, and requested law enforcement to shoot him.

He was slated for trial May 23rd in Butler County District Court, but on Tuesday (04.30), a judge approved the prosecution’s request to dismiss the case since Mitchell was convicted and sentenced last month for sexual exploitation of a minor – cause to engage in the act, a Class C felony.

In that case, the Butler County Sheriff’s Office arrested Mitchell last August after he was accused of sending sexual messages through SnapChat to a then-13-year-old female, activity that started shortly after Mitchell had turned 18 on April 3, 2023.

He received a deferred judgment and was placed on probation for a period of five years. If Mitchell successfully completes the terms of his probation, the conviction will be removed from his record. Mitchell was also prohibited from possessing a firearm and a no-contact order against the victim will be in effect until April 15, 2029.
