Public Gets Closer Look at Charles City High School Facilities Study

About 50 community members got an up close look at possible approaches to addressing the facility needs of Charles City High School during a special meeting Tuesday night.

Brad Leeper with Invision Architects, the firm leading the study of the high school, presented options ranging from fixing what you have now for about $17 million; to a combination of additions and renovations for about $33 million; to replacing the circles and other overhauls for upwards of $40 million.

72% of respondents to a recent public survey agreed that the high school’s facility needs must be addressed soon. Leeper, citing the additions and renovations model, says waiting to do anything means increased cost.

Leeper says among the things the study has identified as problems with the current high school include inadequate space for the music department, the circles, and an entrance to the building that is not secure.

No action was taken during Tuesday’s meeting, but the School Board looks to use information from the study, plus community input to develop a facilities master plan for the high school.
