Questions Raised on How to Proceed with Chickasaw County Jail

A handful of citizens raised questions to the Chickasaw County Board of Supervisors about how to best approach the future of the County Jail in New Hampton.

Supervisors are considering a bond referendum to replace the aging facility, which state jail inspectors have deemed meets most minimum state codes, but needs a plan for upgrades to remain open long term.

A $20,000 feasibility study by The Samuels Group cited 17 deficiencies with the current jail and has proposed a new facility with holding cells, booking area and sheriff’s offices for about $13 million. Former Supervisor Arnie Boge addressed current Board members this week asking if all options, other than building new, have been considered.

Ryan Shawver, who replaced Marty Hemann as Sheriff when he retired earlier this year, countered that the need to replace the current facility has been building for several years.

Last week, the New Hampton City Council voted to explore entering into a joint authority with the County to pursue putting a bond referendum before voters yet this year. However, Supervisor Jacob Hackman cautioned that the County loses some control over their jail facilities with a joint authority.

No decisions were made, but the Board looks to have someone present the ins and outs of a joint authority to them and to have a state jail inspector also provide more insight on the current facility.
