Charles City Main Street Resurfacing & Rehabilitation Underway

Wheels are in motion for the resurfacing and rehabilitation of North Main Street in Charles City.

City Administrator Steve Diers says the City’s recent preconstruction meeting with the contractor, Heartland Asphalt, indicated their plan to to start work on the project this week. On Monday (04.29), crews began marking pavement and curbs for curb and gutterwork and sidewalk repairs/replacement along Main Street from Court Street/Floyd County Courthouse to Clark Street.

A Charles City Police Department Facebook post notes the outside lanes are being or will be closed for work on the sidewalks and edges of the roadway, now marked off with safety cones.

A City Facebook post says reps from the project engineer, Veenstra & Kimm, will visit businesses along the route to share information and general timelines for work. They will also collect email addresses for anyone who wants to receive regular project updates going forward.

Mainstreet Charles City will have reps providing updates as well.

Mayor Dean Andrews says the approximately $2 million price tag will be paid with a combination of $800,000 in state SWAP funding and the City’s local option sales tax.

No target date has been set for the completion of the Main Street project, but officials have indicated it likely won’t be finished in time to have the Fourth of July Parade in downtown Charles City.
