Charles City High School Roof Springs Leaks

Charles City High School sprung a leak overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning.

School District Director of Operations Jerry Mitchell says significant leaking was discovered in the north hallway Thursday morning. The apparent cause of the unexpected water came from work being done on the north end of the High School roof.

As part of a roof refurbishing project, Mitchell says that section is now a low-slope metal roof, which required the contractor to powerwash clean the entire roof. During the process, some seams in the roof separated and small holes developed that went unnoticed when work concluded Wednesday night.

Combined with rains overnight, water leaked into the north hallway, towards the art room, outside the science rooms and other rooms on the north end. Some ceiling tiles also got wet and needed to come down.

Mitchell added that school operations staff were able to control the water coming into the building, with the contractor due back to patch and temporarily fix the roof as they continue to prep to seal the north end. He says operations staff started to fix some of the seams and small holes until the contractor could return.

Despite some cosmetic issues inside the High School caused by the leaking water, Mitchell notes that the roof remains intact.
