Floyd County Continues Towards Wind Ordinance Update
In August, the Floyd County Board of Supervisors heard from NextEra and Invenergy on projects to build about 170 wind turbines combined in areas from Rudd and Floyd south towards Marble Rock and Rockford.
During their regular meeting Monday (10.30), Supervisors continued discussions to hire the North Iowa Area Council of Governments (NIACOG) for assistance in updating the County’s wind ordinance before any development occurs.Â
NIACOG’s John Robbins told the Board that the process could take three to six months to complete while combining input from the County’s Planning and Zoning Commission, public listening posts and, maybe, looking at the ordinances of neighboring counties.
Until those zoning ordinances are completed, the County has been petitioned to enact a moratorium on any new wind project developments, which Supervisor Chair Mark Kuhn said will need specific parameters.
Kuhn said he also wants input from County Attorney Todd Prichard on any possible moratorium.
Supervisors took no action on a moratorium or a contract for NIACOG’s services, but look to address both at their meeting next Monday (11.06).
If hired, NIACOG will also be asked to help update County ordinances for solar energy projects and battery storage.
