Farm Rescue Helps Charles City-Area Farmer in Time of Crisis

In April of 2022, Charles City-area farmer Gary Carsten was kicked in the knee by a cow, breaking his leg and sidelining him for over five months.

Carsten says that help came from the volunteers with Farm Rescue, who planted his corn and soybeans that spring.

In addition to getting the crops planted, Dan Erdman with Farm Rescue says the efforts of their volunteers also afforded Gary time to recuperate.

Erdman says Farm Rescue is dedicated to helping farmers like Gary and Barb Carsten extend the livelihood of family farms. 

Krystyn Stowe is with Busch Light, which has contributed over $1 million since 2019 to Farm Rescue through proceeds from the sale of Busch Light “Corn Cans.”

Carsten says he’ll have plates, pins and screws in his repaired leg for the rest of his life, but with the help of physical therapy at Floyd County Medical Center, he’s back to farming at almost 100%.

And, Carsten says they still have the cow that kicked him, with the cow giving birth to a calf earlier this year.
