Former Charles City Resident Sentenced for Injuries to Infant Son

A north Iowa man could serve up to five years in prison for injuries his infant son suffered in Charles City.

In September of 2022, Charles City Police arrested 24-year-old Ezekiel Larson after his then-four-month-old son was allegedly injured while in his care. The boy’s mother, 21-year-old Madison Geerts, was also arrested after she was accused of knowing the child had been injured, but neither she nor Larson sought medical attention for the infant until four days later.  During that period, investigators said the child was vomiting and not sleeping or eating.

Both Larson and Geerts, who have been residing in Winneshiek County, were charged with child endangerment causing serious injury, a Class C felony.

Last July, Geerts pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of child endangerment causing bodily injury, a Class D felony. She was sentenced to five years of probation.

In August, Larson also agreed to plead guilty to a similar charge and, on Monday (01.08), a Floyd County judge sentenced him to a prison term not to exceed five years. He must also pay a fine of over $1,000.

Larson and Geerts are also being sued by their former landlord for unpaid rent in Charles City. Court records show they did not make rent payments from May to October of 2022 and a judge ordered the couple last January to pay back rent totaling over $6,500.

The couple still has not made any payments to the landlord and no new hearing date on the matter has been established in Floyd County District Court.

Last July, Larson also pleaded guilty to two counts of driving while barred in Mitchell County.
