Threat at New Hampton Middle School Resolved

For the second time in just over two weeks, New Hampton Schools have had to address student safety concerns.

In a letter to the school district Wednesday, Superintendent Jay Jurrens said, “A Middle School student made a threat towards student safety, which was reported by other students this (Wednesday) morning. We appreciate these students that follow our “see something say something” protocol to promptly resolve this situation.”

Jurrens added, “The situation has been addressed and resolved in accordance with school policy. Safety remains a top priority for both the school and local law enforcement.”

On February 25th, New Hampton Police Chief Tim Pederson says the New Hampton Community School District contacted NPHD about a possible threat to the school. He says the incident occurred off school property and, while the possible threat was vague in nature, it was taken very seriously due for student safety and out of an abundance of caution.

After a thorough investigation, which also involved the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State Patrol, it was determined that there was no actual threat to the school.

In early November, a possible threat forced Charles City Middle School and High School into a “soft lockdown” while Charles Police investigated what turned out to be a student who meant the threat as a joke.

In January, separate threats forced Osage Schools to shelter in place and Central Springs into an E-learning day while law enforcement investigated threats that were deemed not credible.
