Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa 2024 Continues

Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa was highlighted by Wednesday’s (03.27) statewide tornado drill.

Mike Kurz is the Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in La Crosse. He says how the tornado drill is executed has changed over the years.

Kurz added that the drill was a great time to put your tornado safety plan into practice, although you can do your own drill anytime.

Floyd County Emergency Management Director Jason Webster said being prepared for tornadoes or any severe weather should include getting signed up with Alert Iowa.

Chickasaw County Emergency Management Director Jeff Bernatz said participation in the statewide tornado drill required activated all outdoor warning sirens in Chickasaw County.

He also reminded citizens that Wednesday was not one of the normal siren testing days, which occurs on the first Wednesday of the month.
