Charles City Makes First Payment on Main Street Rehab

The Main Street Rehab in Charles City has entered its eighth week of work and the City is ready to make its first payment on the project.

During Monday (06.17) night’s City Council meeting, City engineer-in-training Brian Sullivan noted the steady progress being made.

The Council approved the pay order, with about $2 million in costs still remaining for the project.

Here is the latest project update from Bill Ries with Veenstra & Kimm, the engineers for the project.

What happened last week (06.10-06.14):

Curb and gutter replacement and associated sidewalk repairs were substantially complete on the west side of Main Street from Court Street to Riverside Drive.  Traffic Signals were removed at the intersection of Main Street and Hulin Street to make room for the construction of a new sidewalk ramp.  This signal will be relocated once the pavement in this intersection has been restored.  Removals of the sidewalk ramp in the southeast quadrant of Blunt Street and Main Street have also been completed.

Work on the north end of the project to facilitate the realignment of Main Street is progressing.  The main focus this week has been the relocation of utilities to make the realignment possible.

What will happen this week (06.17-06.21):

It is anticipated the pavement restoration from Court Street to Riverside Drive will be completed on Monday.  Following completion of this work, pedestrian and vehicular traffic will be fully restored on Main Street from Gilbert Street to Kelly Street with the exception of two sidewalk ramps.  These ramps are located in the northeast quadrant of Clark Street and Main Street and the southwest quadrant of Kelly Street and Main Street.

Curb and Gutter and associated sidewalk paving is planned in the areas currently removed from Ferguson Street to Hulin Street on the west side of Main Street.  Removals are planned to occur from Kelly Street to Ferguson Street on the west side of Main Street.  The sidewalk ramp in the southeast quadrant of Blunt Street and Main Street is also scheduled to be restored.

Some un-related to the project repairs are planned on Clark Street from Main Street to the alley east of Main Street.  These repairs include storm sewer and water main repairs which will result in this portion of Clark Street being closed.

Who will be impacted and how:

  1. On-Street Parking will be closed on the west side of Main Street from Kelly Street to Hulin Street.
  2. Clark Street from Main Street to the alley east of Main Street will be closed.

Looking ahead:

As the pavement is restored in the areas listed above, the residents of the next scheduled blocks will be notified.

Storm sewer work will begin on the far north end of the project the week of 6/24. Two-way traffic along Main Street between Gilbert Street and Richings Street will be maintained while this work progresses.  There will be some side street intersection closures while this work occurs.
