Closure of Main Street at Charles City Chicken Processing Plant Moves Forward

The City of Charles City took the first official step to vacating North Main Street in front of the Pure Prairie Farms chicken processing plant during Monday’s City Council meeting.

The first reading of the ordinance to close off the street to regular traffic between Lane Street and North Grand Avenue was passed after a motion by Councilwoman Phoebe Pittman.

City Administrator Steve Diers says closing that section of North Main will allow the PPF trucks in and out of the plant more efficiently, while regular vehicle traffic will be re-routed with the closure later this summer.

PPF CEO Brian Roelofs told the council Monday night that the plant is targeting the latter half of July to restart operations.

A public hearing on the street closure will be held as part of the next City Council meeting on June 20th.
