Charles City WRRF to Finish Slightly Over Budget

The cost of building the new Water Resource Reclamation Facility (WRRF) in Charles City will come in a little higher than the original contract for the project, but not by much.

During their regular meeting Wednesday night, the City Council approved possibly the last change order for the WRRF construction for just under $80,000. That will bring the total project cost to about $17.6 million, about $600,000 more than the original price tag. A respectable finish  according to Lance project manager with Fox Engineering.

City Administrator Steve Diers noted that unexpected surprises along the way included the discovery that an old landfill was previously part of the WRRF’s new home just south of Charles City High School.

Diers also echoed that the final numbers for the project came out favorably for the City.

With completion of the WRRF project, the City will also see a “rebate” from the Iowa DNR of $1 million to be used for implementation of water quality best practices in urban and rural areas that improve water quality and water quantity issues. The City will get assistance for those projects from the Floyd Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) after approving an agreement with the SWCD Wednesday night.
