Charles City Police Not Adding Community Camera Program in Near Future

The Mason City Police Department recently added a Community Camera Program page to its website.

MCPD is asking local residents to register their privately owned surveillance cameras with the department to assist in future criminal investigations. Chief Jeff Brinkley says the Community Camera Program can help speed up the process for a neighborhood canvass if there are registered cameras at residences in the immediate area where the incident occurred.

The Charles City Police Department does not have a formal Community Camera Program, but Chief Hugh Anderson says residents have been very cooperative in the past when asked to share their surveillance footage.

Anderson says a Community Camera Program could be possible down the road, but in the meantime, he encourages residents that installing some type of security camera at your home can help catch and/or deter criminal activity.

Anderson notes that an increased use of cameras has proven very helpful in cutting down on “porch pirate” activity, especially at Christmas time. He adds that home security systems are now more affordable than years past and many can be installed by yourself.
