Fire Can Spread Rapidly in Dry, Warm Conditions

A Red Flag Warning had been issued for the entire state of Iowa Thursday due to the extremely dry conditions.

New Hampton Fire Chief Toby Schwickerath says firefighters have  seen first hand how dry our area is after responding to a handful of grass fires last weekend.

Schwickerath cautions that a controlled burn in these conditions could get out of hand before you know it.

Schwickerath adds that with the ground and grass as dry as it is, a fire could also start easily by accident with the ground and grass as dry as it is.

In addition to the Red Flag Warning, Floyd and Butler counties have been under burn bans since noon Tuesday. A burn ban went into effect at 10 am in Winneshiek County.
