North Iowa Man Pleads Guilty to Reduce Charge in Child Sex Abuse Case

A north Iowa man has agreed to plead guilty to a reduced charge in a child sex abuse case.

Charles City Police arrested 61-year-old Randy Nibaur of Elma in March for second-degree sexual abuse, a Class B felony. According to the criminal complaint filed January 23rd, he was accused of sexually assaulting a child under the age of five multiple times between November of 2018 and August of 2021, while he was babysitting the toddler in Charles City.

Nibaur had pleaded not guilty and was scheduled for trial Tuesday (10.31). However, Monday (10.30), he entered an Alford Plea to a lesser charge of third-degree sexual abuse, a Class C felony.  His sentencing has been set for January 8th.

An Alford Plea means the defendant admits there is sufficient evidence that we would likely be found guilty in a trial without going to trial.
