Drought Status Continues to Improve Across North Iowa

Thanks to recent rains, none of Floyd County is considered to be in extreme drought for the first time in several months, while only the southern third of Chickasaw County is rated in extreme drought. 

According to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor for Iowa, based on precipitation through 7 am Tuesday, April 23rd, all of Floyd County and the northern two-thirds of Chickasaw County have improved from D3/extreme drought to the D2/severe drought category. However, over three-quarters of Bremer  County remains in extreme drought as does the eastern third of Fayette County.  

Other noticeable areas of improvement in drought status include the majority of Winneshiek County, going from D2/severe drought to D1/moderate drought. The northeast half of Howard County and southwest half of Allamakee County also improved from severe to moderate drought. The northeast half of Allamakee County improved to the D0/abnormally dry category.

Much of the remainder of the region is rated in D2/severe drought.
