After Standoff, Northeast Iowa Man Charged with Attempted Murder

A late-night, weekend, standoff ended with a northeast Iowa man charged with attempted murder.

Decorah Police say the incident began shortly before 1:30 a.m. Saturday (04.27) morning after officers were called to a residence to investigate a reported assault resulting in significant injury to the victim. When officers arrived, they learned the alleged assailant, 27-year-old Daniel Hammel of Decorah, was still inside the home and had access to firearms.

Authorities from several departments surrounded the home and began talking with Hammel, who eventually surrendered without further incident. He was placed under arrest and charged with attempted murder, a Class B felony.

The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, ISP crisis negotiators, Decorah Fire Department, and WinnMed Ambulance Service also responded to the scene.

Hammel is being held in the Winneshiek County Jail without bond.
