Charles City PTV Ordinance to Go Into effect Friday (Oct. 23)

A new ordinance aimed at increased safety for the operation Personal Transport Vehicles (PTVs) in Charles City will go into effect on Friday (Oct. 23).
Like many cities across Iowa, Charles City looks to curb reckless or unsafe riding of electric bikes and electric scooters that has increased the possibility of accidents for not only riders, but motorists and pedestrians as well.
Monday (Oct. 19) night, the City Council took up the second reading of the ordinance, which City Administrator Tyler Trout said will be outlined in an educational piece that they’ll distribute to the community.
Councilman Patrick Lumley said he likes the parental piece of the ordinance for potential PTV violations.
Like many residents, Mayor Dean Andrews was anxious for passage of the ordinance.
The second reading of the PTV ordinance was approved on a 4-0 vote, minus Councilwoman Phoebe Pittman, out for medical reasons. The Council then voted to waive the third reading of the ordinance, which will become official when it is published in the Charles City Press on Friday.
The City of New Hampton approved a similar PTD ordinance in August.
