New Screwworm Cases Confirmed In New Mexico Livestock

New Mexico has confirmed two new cases of the New World screwworm in Grant County—one in a horse and another in a calf—bringing the state’s total to four since the pest resurfaced in the U.S. this summer.

In response, officials created 12.4-mile restricted zones where livestock must be inspected and cleared before movement. State and federal partners are intensifying surveillance to contain the outbreak.

Even though these cases were located on the southern end of our country, livestock owners should monitor animals for unhealing or foul-smelling wounds and avoid moving suspected cases. Immediate reporting to state livestock boards remains critical to preventing further spread.
