Jean Troge, 90, of Charles City

Jean Troge, 90, of Charles City, died Sunday, October 4, 2026, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Jean Troge will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, October 30, 2026, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City with Reverend Ray Atwood officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 12:30 p.m. until the start of the service at the church.  Jean Marie’s cremains will be buried at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be directed to them so that they can be used for future donations to support alcohol addiction treatment services.

Jean Marie (Munshower) Troge, the daughter of Wilbur and Dorothy (Ewen) Munshower was born May 7, 1936.  She was raised in and graduated from Marble Rock, Iowa, excelling in music.  She was a drum majorette and performed vocally, solo and in every ensemble.  She went on to sing at many couple’s weddings.

Jean was united in marriage to Jack Troge on May 14, 1960.  From this union their three children were born: Phil, Ann and Lisa.

Jean worked hard and on her feet from her early teens until she retired from all jobs.  After high school she attended Fayette for one year and eventually attended nurse’s training to become a Registered Nurse.  She worked as a nurse briefly until Lisa went to school, at which time she started part-time then moved to full-time for many years at Kruse Pharmacy in the Cedar Mall in Charles City.  Jean oversaw cosmetics and fragrances.

After Kruse Pharmacy closed, Jean went back into nursing.  She briefly worked at the local hospital until finally being persuaded by Marian Ayers to work for her family at the Chautauqua Guest Homes where she worked for over 20 years.  Jean started at Riverside until it converted to Assisted Living and then transferred to 11th Street, where she remained until she was 69 years of age.  This career move proved to be ideal for Jean who went into nursing largely due to the TLC element.  Further, Jean’s grandfather was a mortician, so Jean had no fear of death from an early age, even playing in coffins as a girl.  That lack of fear of death was bolstered by her medical background and unshaking faith…perfect fit for end-of-life care.

Jean converted to Catholicism at the age of 18 after attending mass during her school years with close friends.  Her Catholic faith led to Jack’s conversion when they wed.  Jean and her family remained very involved at I.C. and served in many capacities, including Jean being a member of St. Anthony’s Circle.

If being on her feet at Chautauqua weren’t enough, Jean Marie moonlighted several years at the Home Base Lounge in Charles City working for Duane Troge along with her daughters at various junctures.  Those were happy, memorable years for Jean, as she developed many cherished friendships from the area and out of town.

In addition to being a member of I.C., Jean was a former member of the Elks Lodge in Charles City and is a Paul Harris Fellow of the Charles City Rotary Club.  Jean was an excellent baker and cook and mastered the art of perfect bedmaking at a young age.  Jean was also an excellent launderer and was arguably one of the best with an iron, pressing not only her clothes and linens, but others as well.

Jean instilled a love of family, traditions, food, music, God and all people, regardless of color or age, to her children, which will remain a big part of her legacy.  Jean’s idols were Audrey Hepburn and Frank Sinatra, which certainly explains Jean’s love of style and class.

Jean is survived by her son, Phil (Connie) Troge of Des Moines; daughter, Ann Troge, and daughter Lisa (Steve) Elthon, both of Charles City; brother, Ron (Carol) Munshower of Charles City and their 2 children, Wendy (Matt) Ross and Mike (Tonia) Munshower both of Charles City; sister-in-law Sandy Troge of Ames, Iowa; seven grandchildren, several great grandchildren and a few nieces and nephews.  Preceding her in death were her parents, Wilbur Munshower and Dorothy (Gene) Brunsman; brothers-in-law Ken (Berniece) Troge and Gary Show; and sisters-in-law Ardene (Dick) Jorgensen, Shirley Boggess and Bev Johnson; and bonus brother, David Schlader.

Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home, (641) 228-2323, 1205 South Main Street, Charles City, Iowa 50616 is in charge of local arrangements.  Online condolences may be left on the Tribute Wall for the family at www.hauserfh.com.
