Farmers Receive Less Than Seven Cents of the Food Dollar

Next time you check your grocery receipt, consider this: while retail beef prices recently jumped seven percent, cattle farmers saw their payouts drop by ten.
In fact, according to USDA data, farmers take home less than six cents of every dollar spent on American food. The rest—over ninety-four cents—goes toward rising processing, shipping, labor, and packaging costs. Because farmers are price-takers, they have to absorb skyrocketing overhead without any control over market prices.
Consumers are feeling the pinch too, with most viewing current food prices as unfair and pointing the finger at supply chain pressures and large corporations. The good news? Trust in local farmers remains at an all-time high.
