Chickasaw County Forms Advisory Committee to Help Get Ambulance Service Started

An advisory committee has been formed to help get a public ambulance service started in Chickasaw County.

The group was approved by the Board of Supervisors during a special meeting Thursday as the County pushes to get service up and running by January 1, 2023. Named to the Ambulance Advisory Council are Doreen Cook, Jessica Durnan, Joel Knutson, Josh Schuchhardt, Jeff Bernatz, Bridget Edson, and Board of Supervisors chair Matt Kuhn.

The group will be asked to make recommendations on equipment purchases, which County Attorney David Laudner asked if that might include buying an ambulance from the County’s current private provider, Chickasaw Ambulance Service.

Nashua and Alta Vista both opted against 28E agreements to help fund ambulance operations along with the other cities in the county, but Kuhn says he’s open to bringing them back into the fold while noting it would increase the budget of the ambulance service.

Forming the advisory committee comes after it was revealed earlier in the week that their ambulance service consultant ended their contract citing the negative political climate in the county, which Schuchhardt says could also limit applications for an EMS director.

Supervisors approved a job description and will begin advertising for the director position with an initial deadline for submission of applications by September 30th.
