Faulty Power Strip Caused Mason City Fire That Killed Four Kids

A house fire that killed four children in Mason City has been ruled accidental.

KIMT is reporting that a joint investigation by the Mason City Fire Department and the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office has determined that the Wednesday morning blaze, which also injured two other occupants, is being blamed on an electrical power strip. Officials say their investigation is complete.

The fire took the lives of 12-year-old John McLuer, 10-year-old Odin McLuer, six-year-old Drako McLuer, and three-year-old Phenix McLuer. 55-year-old John McLuer  and 11-year-old Ravan McLuer also suffered burns from the blaze in the 500 block of North Washington Avenue.

The Mason City School District has issued a statement in the wake of the deadly house fire that took the lives of the children who went to school in the district.

A Facebook post reads, “All of us at Mason City Community Schools are shaken by the loss of our students and extend our deepest sympathies to the family and those closest to them.  The district counseling staff, Central Rivers AEA crisis team members, and other local agencies will be on hand today and will be embedded within each district building impacted by this tragedy for those who may need additional support.  In addition, students will be encouraged to utilize crisis team member support as needed.”

A GoFundMe page for the family can be found by clicking here.
