First of Iowa’s Two Shotgun Deer Seasons Opens Saturday

The first of two shotgun deer seasons opens Saturday in Iowa.

The D-N-R’s, Tyler Harms, says hunters harvested nearly 103-thousand deer last year and he doesn’t expect that number to drop.

Harms says the numbers of deer harvested during the early archery season that started October 1st have been positive, but how the overall deer harvest will fare is yet to be determined.

Harms adds that snow or rain occurring during shotgun seasons could also impact the deer harvest.

While officials stress the importance of safe hunting practices, Heidi Reams, naturalist with Floyd County Conservation, has words of caution for non-hunters as well.

The first shotgun deer hunting season runs December 3rd to the 7th with season two running December 10th to 18th.
