Anyone interested in becoming the Floyd County District 3 Supervisor must submit their application for appointment to the post.
Republican Jeff Hawkbaker won the November 8th election for the District 3 seat. However, 10 days later, Hawbaker announced that he would decline the nomination because he was unable to retire from his day job in 2023, preventing him from devoting enough time to serve as Supervisor.
Democrat Mark Kuhn won the race for the new District 1 seat and Republican Dennis Keifer won District 2. At Monday’s regular meeting of the current Board of Supervisors, Kuhn says he and Keifer will welcome whoever is appointed.
Democrat Jim Lundberg finished second to Hawbaker in the District 3 Supervisors race and is considering submitting his application for the appointment. Like he did during the election, Lundberg asked Monday whether a Supervisor is a full or part-time position.
By statute, a committee of the county auditor, recorder and treasurer can appoint someone to take Hawbaker’s seat. However, that appointment can not be made until January 2nd, when the District 3 term officially begins.
The deadline for application submission is 4 p.m. December 28th at the County Auditor’s Office. Applicants must have resided in District 3 for at least 60 days prior to being appointed.Â
Eligible electors of the district could also file a petition with the County requiring that the vacancy be filled by special election.
