Chickasaw County To Interview Sheriff Candidates Wednesday Night

The Chickasaw County Board of Supervisors will interview two candidates Wednesday night in their efforts to appoint a replacement for Sheriff Marty Hemann, who will retire later this month.

Hopefuls include Hemann’s Chief Deputy Ryan Shawver and current Floyd County Sheriff’s deputy Dan Sargent. Two other candidates applied, but County Attorney David Laudner told Supervisors last week they did not meet the requirements for consideration.

Among the requirements, the Sheriff’s candidates must be ILEA-certified peace officers, be 21 or older, and have no criminal background. The appointee must also reside in the County at least 60 days prior to being appointed.

Shawver is the only candidate who currently meets that stipulation, while Sargent, if appointed. would have to move into and reside in Chickasaw County for at least 60 days before taking the position.

Supervisors can’t make an official appointment until the position officially becomes open when Hemann retires January 19th. At minimum, state code calls for Shawver to assume the role of Sheriff when Hemann retires. Whoever is appointed, anyone in the County could still file a petition within 14 days of the appointment to call for a special election to fill the post.

The Board will interview Shawver Wednesday night at 6 pm followed by an interview with Sargent at 7 pm, both in closed sessions.
