Floyd County Supervisors Weigh Legal Options for Carbon Pipelines

The new Floyd County Board of Supervisors are weighing their legal options for local regulations they could put in place for possible  construction of underground carbon-capture pipelines in the County.

Earlier this week, new Supervisors Mark Kuhn, Dennis Keifer and Jim Jorgenson heard from Timothy Whipple, an attorney with Ahlers and Cooney, PC. The Des Moines-based law firm is representing several counties in addressing concerns to the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) about carbon pipelines, including Summit Carbon Solutions and Navigator CO2 Ventures, who both want to build in Floyd County.

Whipple says Floyd County can join other counties in their legal suits to reduce costs, but they likely have to spend extra to address concerns specific to Floyd County and Charles City.

Supervisor Chair Mark Kuhn says he heard several concerns about the carbon pipelines during his campaign for office.

Supervisors have invited Whipple to join their next meeting to continue discussing the County’s legal options regulating the carbon pipelines and how to present their concerns to the IUB.
