David was born to Edwin and Hilda Hagen, on March 19, 1939, in Lake Mills, IA. After graduating from high school, David worked for John Deere Tractor Works, Waterloo, IA, retiring after 30 years, then driving for Sherman Nursery in Charles City, IA.

David met his lovely wife, Helen Emma Hallum, after she asked his sister Marilyn to arrange a date. They were married September 19, 1959, at Oakland Lutheran Church in Minnesota. He helped raise their two daughters with discipline, humility, faith and developed their love for traveling and adventure.

David has had many hobbies. He built a stock car (#14), a ski boat and RV/camper, restored a 1930 Model A, earned his pilot’s license, and built a two-seater airplane. He was skillful at home repairs and remodeling – anything from plumbing and electrical to refurbishing their many homes.

“Smiling Dave” never met a stranger and loved talking with friends at the McDonalds in Charles City. He will be dearly missed by his friends and loved ones.

David is survived by his wife, Helen; daughters, Cathy (John) Draz and Carol (Jay) Powers; grandchildren Shaun (Kim) Gerloff, Courtney (Jamie) Beck and Cody (Kailyn) Draz; great-grandchildren: Adalynn & Parker Gerloff and Ava & Olivia Beck; siblings: Lyle (Marylou) Hagen, Marilyn Stevens, Ervin (Linda) Hagen; and brother-in-law Dale (Mary) Hallum.

Chris Berg

Chris was born in Webster City and raised in Charles City, which basically means he’s been corn‑fed and radio‑bred since day one. As a kid, he was always caught singing along to the radio — and while he’ll tell you he’s great at karaoke, let’s just say the audience’s ears often file a noise complaint. When he’s not busy butchering ‘80s power ballads, Chris enjoys starting overly ambitious home projects that rarely make it past the “great idea” stage. He lives in Charles City with his endlessly patient wife Vicki and their kids, Brynlee and Jaxon, who have already perfected the art of the eye‑roll every time Dad cracks another “dad joke.”
