Temporary Traffic Signal in Charles City Could Be in Place 6 Months

A temporary traffic signal at one of Charles City’s busiest intersections may be in use a little longer than you might expect.

During the City Council meeting February 6th, City Administrator Steve Diers said it could take up to a half a year to replace the traffic light permanently at the corner of Main and Gilbert streets, across from the Floyd County Courthouse.

Diers also explained that the former pole supporting the previous permanent traffic signal had been hit so many times over the years by vehicles, there was not much left holding the pole up. It was the same reason the City replaced the traffic light across the street next to St. John’s Church prior to Christmas.

The Council approved the replacement traffic signal with a cost ranging from about $42,000 to around $47,000. Diers says the higher price could come into play if crews have to bore under the street to get wiring in place for the new signal.
