Six Injured After Their Horse and Buggy Struck by Truck in Floyd County

Six members of a rural Floyd County family were injured after their horse and buggy were hit by a pickup northeast of Charles City Tuesday.

The Iowa State Patrol says the collision occurred shortly after 3:30 pm Tuesday afternoon in the 3000 block of 140th Street, two miles west of Colwell. The crash report says a Chevrolet 1500 pickup driven by 66-year-old Jim Whitmarsh of Charles City was eastbound when it struck the rear of an eastbound buggy driven by 32-year-old Lavern Stauffer of Charles City.  Stauffer and five passengers were ejected from the buggy.

Taken to Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City for treatment of injuries were Stauffer, 27-year-old Teresa Stauffer, a four-year-old male child, and three female children ages six, two, and less than one year old.

The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, Colwell Fire Department, Floyd Fire Department, AMR ambulance, and Chickasaw County EMS also assisted at the scene of the crash, which remains under investigation.
