Floyd County Supervisors to Appoint New County Attorney

As anticipated, the Floyd County Board of Supervisors will appoint a replacement for outgoing County Attorney Rachel Ginbey, who is resigning.

Ginbey has submitted her letter of resignation to become the County Attorney in Hancock County. Her last day as Floyd County Attorney will be March 12th.

During their regular meeting Monday, Supervisors approved their intent to fill the vacancy by appointment on March 27th. Assistant County Attorney Randy Tilton, who would serve as County Attorney in the interim, expressed concerns about the workload in between Ginbey’s departure and the appointment date and/or beyond.

Those interested in the County Attorney post will have until March 17th to submit their application to the County Auditor’s office.

However, any eligible elector in the County could also file a petition to force a special election for the position. That petition would need a minimum of 809 signatures and must be filed within 14 days of the Supervisors’ intent-to-fill vacancy is published or within 14 days of the actual appointment.

Ginbey’s resignation comes after she was re-elected to another four-year term this past November. Whoever is appointed would serve out the remainder of her term, which ends December 31, 2026.
