Charles City Street, Sewer, Water to Split Purchase of New Vac Truck

The City of Charles City sewer, street and water departments will split the purchase a new vac truck for about $612,000.

During their regular meeting Monday night, the City Council heard from Street Superintendent Cory Spieker about replacing the current vac truck purchased in 2012.

The unit is mainly used to jet and vac out sanitary sewer lines and manholes, but is also used for storm sewer lines and manholes. Consideration was given to contracting the service outside the City, but Spieker said having their own vac allows for quicker action.

Spieker says the vac truck helps keeps water moving throughout the city.

The Council approved the purchase of the new vac truck split over the current and upcoming fiscal years. In total, the sewer department will cover about $307,000 of the cost with the street and water departments each paying just over $150,000 each.

After the new unit arrives, the City will also sell the current vac truck to a local contractor for $150,000.
