Charles City Hires New Principals for High School, Lincoln Elementary

New principals have been hired for Charles City High School and Lincoln Elementary School.

The School Board met in special session Tuesday to approve the appointments of Jeromiah Bliss as high school principal and Dan Phipps as elementary school principal.

Bliss is currently assistant high school principal with the Clear Lake School District and previously served as the 7th-12th grade principal in the North Tama County School District. Bliss will take over July 1st and replaces outgoing Principal Brian Jurrens, who’s resignation will be effective June 30th.

Phipps currently serves as security ambassador education manager of Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Previously, Phipps was assistant building principal at Mason City High School, and was named Iowa’s Outstanding Assistant Secondary Principal of the Year for the 2020-2021 school year. He has experience in the United States Air Force and the U.S. Navy Reserves.

In a statement, Charles City Schools Superintendent Dr. Anne Lundquist said, “We are incredibly excited to welcome both Jeromiah Bliss and Dan Phipps to our school district community. Both are highly talented, driven, and dedicated professionals and administrators who will undoubtedly continue to lead our students to success.”

Bliss holds a master’s degree in educational administration with a principal endorsement from Northwestern College in Orange City and a bachelor’s degree in kindergarten-6th grade elementary education from Upper Iowa University.

Phipps holds a master’s degree in educational administration from Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois, and a bachelor’s degree in physical education from St. Ambrose University in Davenport. Phipps and his wife live just outside Charles City.

Phipps will start June 12th and replace Marcie DeVore, who has been Lincoln Elementary Principal since 2013. She’s leaving to become the new director of teaching and learning for the Oskaloosa School District, now led by former Charles City Superintendent Mike Fisher.
