New Hampton Student Comes to Aid of Fallen Student

New Hampton School officials are commending the actions of students, teachers and staff in responding to a student medical situation.

A school district Facebook post states that students and staff stepped up to help render assistance to a student who was having a medical emergency on Thursday. During the incident, a student noticed that a fellow student had fallen to the floor and was not breathing well. The helping student was able to quickly assess the situation and help to open the student’s airway. In doing so, this action helped create a positive outcome for the student in need.

The post adds that at the same time, New Hampton teachers were working on helping to make the room safe for everyone, move students to different locations, notify the office, call 911 for help, and halt the movement of students around the building to help emergency responders get to the student in need.

In the post, Superintendent Jay Jurrens noted that “Planning and preparation drills have given our students and staff the ability to quickly make decisions and help everyone in situations that can occur in the school. Every year our seniors are required to have training in CPR.  As a high school, we have been doing it during our PE classes for several years so all students are exposed to how to handle some of these medical type emergencies.”

He also thanked the community response time by EMS, police, and first responders.

“We have excellent staff in our community and a need for more volunteers to help keep our community safe and strong!”
