Main Street Charles City Surpasses $50 million Benchmark in Private Investments

Charles City was recently recognized by Main Street Iowa and the Iowa Economic Development Authority at the annual Main Street Iowa Development Awards celebration in Des Moines (04.21).

The program honors the efforts of those who work tirelessly to revitalize Iowa’s downtowns and to make a difference in the state’s Main Street districts.

The Main Street Charles City Board was presented with the $50 Million Benchmark Award for surpassing $50 million in private dollars invested in the downtown commercial district since the Main Street Charles City program was established in 1994. Those investments include building rehabilitation, property acquisition and new construction. Only a small handful of the 54 current MSI communities around the state have achieved that milestone mark.

Leadership Award winners from each of the current 54 Main Street Iowa communities were recognized, with Rustic Corner’s Tami Vetter honored as Main Street Charles City’s top volunteer from 2022 for her dedication to Main Street revitalization by enhancing economic development in the community.

Both the Union House commercial/residential project and the Town of Colors murals program were recognized among the finalists for various state-wide competitive award categories.

Mark Wicks, who manages both the Main Street Charles City program as well as the Charles City Area Chamber of Commerce, was one of 12 Main Street leaders recognized in the unveiling of the new Tenured Executive Directors (TED) program.
