The Iowa DNR is looking into the second fish kill in northeast Iowa this week.
Officials were notified Wednesday of a fish kill in Crane Creek, southwest of Readlyn in Bremer County.
DNR staff from the Fisheries Bureau and Environmental Services & Compliance Bureau investigated and found that the fish kill extended approximately three miles. However, field tests found no presence of ammonia and no definitive source of the kill has been identified at this time.Â
DNR staff were onsite Thursday to conduct a count of dead fish. Several different species of dead fish were observed in the area. The issue does not appear to be ongoing, since live fish were also found in the area of the fish kill.
Earlier this week, the DNR said summer heat led to a natural fish kill in the unnamed tributary to Otter Creek that flows through Oelwein. With extremely warm water temperatures and low flow conditions, less than 1,000 fish were killed over a two mile stretch of the stream.Â
Investigators saw live fish of multiple species in the same locations that appeared in good condition.Â
