City of New Hampton Seeks Applications for Police Officer

The City of New Hampton is not only looking to add a police officer to their force, they’re also looking for candidates to at least apply to potentially fill the post.

Mayor Bobby Schwickerath said as of Wednesday, June 7th, they had yet to receive an application for the position created by the resignation last month of officer-in-training, Nick Sylvester, who’s last day was May 26th.

Sylvester and Austin Hageman joined the NHPD last December, ending a six-month period of the department being short-handed; down two officers much of that stretch. Both were going through police academy certification training when Sylvester submitted his resignation. He will have to pay the City back for his academy training.

The City is accepting applications to fill Silvester’s vacancy, with submissions currently due June 16th. However, Schwickerath says that deadline will likely be extended.

Last month, Tim Pederson was hired as the new police chief, replacing former chief Zach Nosbisch, who left the NHPD to become Chief Deputy with the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Office.

It was also last month that the City entered into a “memo of understanding” with the employees union that will increase pay in the police department starting July 1st.
