New traffic and street lights at one of Charles City’s busiest intersections are now operational as of Friday afternoon.
Street Superintendent Cory Spieker says a new traffic control signal as well as new street light with LED lamp, at the corner of South Main and Gilbert Street, were installed by crews and both are now in service.
The previous permanent traffic signal had to be removed in January after it had been struck so many times by vehicles, the base had become unstable. A temporary traffic signal was put in place, but was removed earlier this month to begin the process of installing the new permanent lights.Â
During that period, a four-way stop sign had been placed at the center of the intersection since. That was removed Friday.
In February, the City Council approved the replacement traffic signal with a cost around $45,000.
