Officials Identify Human Remains Found in Mason City

A week after human remains were discovered in Mason City, authorities have identified the deceased.
Mason City Police were dispatched Thursday, July 6, for a report of human remains found in the 200 block of 7th Street Northeast. At the scene, Chief Jeff Brinkley said they were unable to make an immediate identification due to decomposition of the body and they were working with the State Medical Examiner’s Officer to assist with the identification.
MCPD put out preliminary information asking for the community’s help in identifying remains, described as a male, race unknown, 20-to-40 years of age, 5’6†to 5’10†in height and weighing about 170 pounds. He was dressed in green jogger sweatpants, a black tank top, and black and red Nike brand tennis shoes, with an Ace-wrap bandage on the left ankle.Â
In a press release Friday (07.14), Brinkley said MCPD was contacted by a local family who provided information that helped in making identification and, on Thursday (07.13), the State Medical Examiner’s office confirmed the identity as David John-Otto Rhoades, age 27, of Mason City. There was no evidence of foul play in Rhoades’ death.
Anyone with additional information about this case is asked to contact the Mason City Police Department at 641-421-3636.Â
