Construction for Charles City Parking Project to Begin in August

Construction for the “Mill Race Parking Project” in Charles City could start in about three weeks.

The project will close off regular through-traffic on the street that starts as Riverside Drive and then curves north to become Jackson Street. The  change is expected to make the area safer for pedestrians from the corner of South Main Street to the Clark Street intersection while creating about 70 additional parking spaces.

City Administrator Steve Diers says work could begin by the second or third week in August.

Once the reconfiguration is under way, Diers says the contractor, Lodge Construction of Clarksville, will be “on the clock” for the first phase of the project.

While the street is expected to be reopened for vehicle parking about six weeks after construction commences, the contractor still has until October to finalize remaining work associated with the project.

Diers has said the City will also do everything they can to accommodate the public’s access to the businesses in that area during construction.
