Petition Signatures Mount for Charles City School High School Bond Referendum

About two-thirds of the needed number of petition signatures have been collected in an effort to get a $28.5 million bond referendum before voters in the Charles City School District.Â
The bond would pay for the “revitalization†of the High School, a building that hasn’t seen any major upgrades since it was built 63 years ago. About a third of the money would add a new performing arts auditorium to the High School.
Some 445 verified signatures are needed for the bond petition in order to advance the measure to the ballot this fall, although officials would like a cushion and are shooting for 500 signatures.
Superintendent Dr. Anne Lundquist says about 100 signatures were collected last week, pushing their total to over 300. She adds that they’d like to have all the signatures needed by the end of July, which will give the school district optimal time to get the bond referendum details and factual information out to the public.Â
The actual deadline to have petition signatures into the Floyd County Auditor’s office is 45 calendar days prior to the election, which is November 7th.
Lundquist says petition forms are available at the Central Services building and at Prologue Books in downtown Charles City. Forms can also be downloaded off the school district website, where information is available on the proposed floor plans, plus supporting documents that explain the financials of the projects, including tax implications for property owners.
