Summit Carbon Pipeline Permit in North Dakota Denied

Summit Carbon Solutions, which wants to build sections of its underground carbon capture pipeline in Chickasaw, Floyd, Mitchell, Franklin, and Cerro Gordo counties, suffered a setback Friday in the state they plan for the final destination of their sequestered CO2.

Radio Iowa’s O. Kay Henderson reports.

The North Dakota decision against Summit comes as the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) plans to start its hearing on Summit’s pipeline route through Iowa August 22nd in Fort Dodge. The hearing could last for months, although the company wants a decision by the end of the year on their permit application to build its pipeline along a 680 mile route through Iowa.

Last month, Summit added another “branch” to its network when the Absolute Energy ethanol plant near St. Ansgar signed on to the project, which would require connecting the pipeline with the current proposed route in Floyd County near Rockford

Summit and the IUB will host informational public meetings on that pipeline addition on Tuesday. The first session in Mitchell County is scheduled from noon to 3 pm at the Cedar River Complex Events Center in Osage. A Floyd County meeting follows from 6 to 9 pm in the Youth Enrichment Center on the Floyd County Fairgrounds.
