Speed Cameras Considered in Charles CityÂ
The City of Charles City is mulling the possibility of installing speed cameras along main roads into the City, an idea that citizen Scott Galliart told the City Council Monday night he has serious reservations about.
Galliart added that speed cameras also take away the human element of motorists being able to explain their driving to police officers. He also suggested raising the fines or installing speed display signs as ways to deter speeding.
Mayor Dean Andrews noted that the intent of the speed cameras is getting the biggest violators.
Even if speed cameras become reality, Andrews says the plan is to also have the police department make the final decision on whether a ticket is issued.
The Council could take no action on the measure Monday night since it was not on the agenda and the idea is still in the exploratory stage.
