New Hampton Man Not Guilty of Terrorism by Reason of Insanity

A New Hampton man accused of threatening a flag football game in Cresco last fall has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.
30-year-old Dylan Schnur was charged with felony terrorism after an October 1, 2022, incident in which he posted to his Instagram account the statement “Bad shooter headed to the football game in Cresco *expletive* Iowa.â€Â The threat led to cancellation of a flag football game at the Cresco Fitness Center after Cresco Police and Howard County Sheriff’s Office contacted staff and parents.
Prior to his trial in Howard County, a mental examination was ordered for Schnur. Court documents state Schnur told the examining doctor that he was trying to warn people about a bomb at the football field in Cresco…but rather a “Cresco” that existed on a planet named “Ortho,†not Earth. Schnur reportedly told the doctor that he had psychic abilities and that Ortho was the next planet to go to war.
The doctor who examined Schnur told the judge that when he committed his crime, Schnur suffered from “a mental illness, schizoaffective disorder; he was psychotic and manic. He was experiencing paranoid and grandiose delusions, thought broadcasting and thought insertion, and he was attending to auditory hallucinations.â€
The judge ruled Schnur not guilty by reason of insanity and he has been committed to the Penn Center Residential Facility in Delhi to receive mental health treatment.
In February 2022, Schnur pleaded guilty to second-degree harassment after he was arrested in Cresco in August of 2021 for spitting on a victim and telling the victim, “Just imagine if I came here with different intentions.â€
