Saturday Fire Displaces Charles City Family

There were no injuries reported, but a Charles City family has been displaced by a weekend fire.

The Charles City Fire Department was called to a house at 501 South Main Street at about 4:45 pm Saturday (10.14) for a report of a fire in a kitchen that was spreading through the ceiling. Crews responded quickly and were able to extinguish the fire and remove the smoldering boards. CCFD says everyone was able to exit the home safely and the damage is repairable.

The Floyd and Cowell fire departments, Floyd County Search & Rescue, and AMR Ambulance also responded and were on scene for about 90 minutes.

Initial indications are that the cause of fire appears to be electrical in nature and the homeowner, Ann DeBettignies, says her family has been displaced with the power shut off to the residence for safety reasons.

She has established a GoFundMe account to help with the cost of repairs, with a goal of $5,000. Her fundraiser description says a number of animals in the home were also safely evacuated. A link to donate is included with this story on our station website.

While emergency responders were on the scene of the fire Saturday, another call came in requesting an ambulance for a person who had passed out a few houses down at 509 South Main. One person was transported by AMR to Floyd County Medical Center at about 5:30 pm Saturday.

CCFD says the two emergency calls were unrelated.
