Crowded New Hampton Mayor Ballot, City Council…Not So Much

While three candidates are on the ballot Tuesday (11.07) for the Mayor of New Hampton, there’s a shortage of official candidates to fill seats for City Council.
First elected in 2019, Mayor Bobby Schwickerath is seeking a second four-year term while facing opposition from Melanie Schmitt and former New Hampton Fire Chief Steve Geerts, who also previously served eight years as a Chickasaw County Supervisor.
There are three seats to be filled Tuesday on the New Hampton City Council, but only one incumbent is on the official ballot seeking re-election, Joe Denner, who is running unopposed. Council seats currently occupied by Cory McDonald and Jason Speltz are also up for election, but neither filed nomination papers, although Speltz says he’s running as a write-in candidate.
Current Council members Kalista Porath-Daly and Mindy Casterton-Humpal were both elected through write-in campaigns in November 2021.Â
The New Hampton School Board posts of Jay Matthews and Nate Schiwckerath are also up for election with both seeking re-election with no other candidates on the ballot.
