Donald “Don” Skretta, 83, Charles City

Donald “Don” Skretta, 83, of Charles City, passed away Wednesday, November 15, 2023 at his home.

A Mass of Chirstian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City with Reverend Tom Heathershaw officiating.  Burial will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in rural Charles City.

Visitation will be on Wednesday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the start of the service at the church.

Donald “Don” August Skretta, the son of August and Wilma (Soblik) Skretta, was born June 11, 1940 in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. He graduated from Crestwood High School in Cresco, Iowa.  Don was united in marriage to Marie “Fran” Zeigler on February 6, 1960.

Don worked at a John Deere Store for a number of years before starting his own repair company in Charles City in the early 1980’s.  He continued to own and operate Don’s Repair until his retirement in 2019.

Don was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. He loved attending Mass, and when he couldn’t go in person he watched on TV.  Don was also active in the Knights of Columbus.  He enjoyed collecting toy farm equipment, snowmobiling, fishing, bowling, dancing at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, watching football, working word search books and watching the Gameshow Network.

Living family members include his wife, Marie “Fran” Skretta of Charles City; daughter, LaVonne (Chris) Marty of Fertile; son, Tracy (Tammy) Skretta of Omaha, Nebraska; daughter, Holly (Sean) Jackson of Altoona; Trisha (Jamie) Kilby of Charles City; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; along with several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, August and Wilma Skretta; and brother, Duane Skretta.

Chris Berg

Chris was born in Webster City and raised in Charles City, which basically means he’s been corn‑fed and radio‑bred since day one. As a kid, he was always caught singing along to the radio — and while he’ll tell you he’s great at karaoke, let’s just say the audience’s ears often file a noise complaint. When he’s not busy butchering ‘80s power ballads, Chris enjoys starting overly ambitious home projects that rarely make it past the “great idea” stage. He lives in Charles City with his endlessly patient wife Vicki and their kids, Brynlee and Jaxon, who have already perfected the art of the eye‑roll every time Dad cracks another “dad joke.”
