New Water Treatment Plant for New Hampton Still Almost Six Years Away

While the New Hampton City Council this week approved a facility plan for construction of a new wastewater treatment plant, it could still be almost six years until it’s up and running.

Mayor Bobby Schwickerath says the next step in the process is to submit their plan for state review in January.

Schwickerath says the building of the new plant will be the culmination of a project that ramped up in 2022.

If the new wastewater plant is operational by 2029, it would come seven years ahead of the 2036 deadline issued by the Iowa DNR.

With engineering, design and construction, the price tag for the plant is estimated at $33 million.

Schwickerath, whose term as Mayor ends December 31st, cited moving the project forward as one of his biggest accomplishments in office.

Former New Hampton Fire Chief and Chickasaw County Supervisor Steve Geerts will take over as New Hampton Mayor January 1st.
